Sarah Denison

Sarah Denison married James Harris at Boston in 1666. A history of New London County calls her Sarah Denison of Boston. She bore eleven children there over roughly the next twenty years, and the eldest son, Lieutenant James Harris, was born at Boston on 4 April 1673. About 1690 the household moved to New London in Connecticut. Her parents are not known. The Denison surname comes from the printed Harris genealogy, and no record of the marriage itself is known.

She outlived her husband. His will of 4 June 1714 left her his whole estate for her maintenance during her natural life and made her executrix, with their eldest son James joining her as executor, and only what remained after her own death was to be divided among the children. Robert Denison and Joanna Denison witnessed the will and George Denison was clerk of the court that proved it at New London on 13 September 1715, which suggests the family had settled among her own relations. She was living on that day, and when she died is not known.

A compiled account once supposed her husband had taken a second wife, on the strength of a duplicated entry for a son James in the Boston book. That entry has no date of birth, and it was explained by the custom of giving a new child the name of an elder half brother. The will disproves it. She was his first and only wife and she survived him, and the duplicate is a clerk's error.
