Born in England about 1822, she arrived in Georgetown, Madison County, New York in 1843 or 1844, married Sanford Head Stewart on 30 August 1843, and died there on 20 July 1888. Her English birth is documented, steady across the 1855, 1860 and 1870 censuses. Her surname is not documented by any record made in her lifetime. The Stewart Clan Magazine, a family genealogy printed in the early 1900s, gives her as Sarah E. Seals, and her Find a Grave memorial gives Seals too. The stone does not: it reads only SARAH E. / HIS WIFE / 1822 - 1888.

She and Sanford raised five children in Georgetown: Dora, born 29 October 1844, Oscar M. on 1 October 1846, Anna Louisa on 29 December 1851, Mary L. on 30 May 1857 and Philetus A. on 6 February 1860. The censuses give much the same years, though as indexed they call the eldest Theodore C. The 1880 census gives her birth as England, 1823.

She fell seriously ill at the start of July 1888, and the Georgetown column of the Oneida Semi-Weekly Democratic Union reported it. She died on 20 July. Her death notice gave her age as sixty-four, which puts her birth about 1823 or 1824. Neither notice gives her own surname.
