Sarah Elizabeth Murphy
Sarah Elizabeth Murphy, called Betty, was born on 25 August 1849 in Butler County, Alabama. Her memorial names her parents as Julius B. Murphy and Amanda Seale, and her younger brothers and sister as John W., Augustus G. "Chuck", Anderson D. "Dock" and Anna Eldora "Ella" Murphy. It gives her father as a private in the 12th and 13th Alabama Infantry regiments who died on 12 April 1865 at Richmond, Virginia, three days after Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate army at Appomattox. He lies among the unknown Confederate dead in Oakwood Cemetery at Richmond. Betty would have been fifteen.
Her children, as her memorial gives them, were Emmett B., born on 15 April 1879, Kate, born in 1882, Hillary Thomas, called Hill, born in 1886, Zollie H., born in 1891, and a son called Pomp. Zollie died in 1910 at about nineteen. All of them carried the surname Murphy.
In her old age she lived with her eldest son. In 1920 Bettie Murphy, 70, was in Emmett Murphy's household in the Starlington precinct of Butler County, with Emmett's wife Etta and their daughters Lucy, Annie, Jessie Mae and Vurtice.
Sarah Elizabeth Murphy died in Butler County on 7 May 1922, aged 72. She is buried in Shackleville Cemetery, where her mother Amanda had been buried in 1909, under a plain gray granite block that reads only "Betty Murphy".
