Sarah Hammond
Sarah Hammond married Peter Hammond at Hummelstown, in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Soon after the wedding he had to sell his property to pay a forfeited bail, and they moved with their goods by wagon to Franklin County, settling near Strasburg.
In 1813, before the move, Sarah and Peter had a daughter, Mary Ann, at Hummelstown. She was christened there in 1814 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, with her mother entered simply as Sarah. The congregation still met in its log church of 1766; the limestone church that replaced it was begun the following May.
By 1830 the family was in Fannett Township, at the upper end of Path Valley. The census that year counts a woman in her forties in Peter's household, very probably Sarah herself, which would put her birth between 1780 and 1790.
Three of their children are named: Peter, the elder, Mary Ann, and Jacob, born near Strasburg. Sarah died about 1836, when Jacob was twelve, about the time he went to live with his brother on a farm in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County. Her maiden name is not known.
