Sarah Jane Barton
Sarah Jane Barton was born on 27 February 1861 at Alton, the seat of Oregon County, Missouri, in the Ozark hills on the Arkansas line, and lived there almost all of her eighty-eight years. She was called Jane. Her death certificate gives her father only as Barton and her mother as unknown; her family's record of her grave names her parents John Barton and Nancy Lawson, called Fountie.
At about seventeen she married Lewis M. Clapp, an Alabama man twelve years older. Their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in October 1878, and the census of June 1880 found the three of them in Oak Grove Township, Sarah J. twenty and Mary E. one. A second daughter, Delia, was born in May 1882.
Lewis died in 1886, when Jane was twenty-five. His brother William Adrian Clapp had lost his own wife, Mary Caroline Robinson, the same year. In September 1886 Jane married William, and raised her two girls and his son William with the children they had together: Leslie Edgar, Edgar, John Irvin, Otis Sanford, Iva Gertrude and Luther, called Luke. The census of 1900 found the whole family in Goebel Township with Mary, twenty-one, the eldest at home; in 1910 they were farming in Piney Township with seven children still in the house. About 1901 Mary married George Washington Risenhoover, and in the 1920s she went west with him to Cahone, in Colorado.
In April 1930 William, seventy-seven, and Jane, sixty-nine, were living in Piney Township in the house of their son Luther. William died at Alton on 5 March 1937, of heart disease, and Jane gave the information for his death certificate. She lived another twelve years, a widow at Alton, and died there on 4 September 1949, aged eighty-eight, of cancer of the lung. Her son Otis, of Houston, Texas, gave the information for her certificate. She was buried at Cave Spring Cemetery on 6 September 1949, beside William, under a double stone that reads SARAH JANE on one side and WILLIAM ADRIAN on the other.
