Sarah Skinner was born at Hartford, Connecticut, on 4 November 1677. She was the sixth of the seven children of John Skinner and Mary Easton. Both her grandfathers were among the original proprietors of Hartford: John Skinner, who married Mary Loomis and came over in 1638, and Deacon Joseph Easton, who came with Hooker's company in 1636. Through her grandmother Mary Loomis she was a great-granddaughter of Joseph Loomis of Windsor.
Her father died when she was twelve, on 15 September 1690, and her mother on 18 June 1695. Her brothers and sisters were Mary, John, Joseph, Nathaniel, Richard and Thomas.
She married Deacon John Goodwin of the east side of Hartford. Her children were Hannah, born in 1698, Damaris, Mary, baptised in 1701/2, who married Joseph Cowles of East Hartford, Sarah, John, born in 1706, William, Joseph, Caleb, Susanna, Richard and Ruth. She died in May 1735, and her husband married again.
