Shelby E. Bass
Shelby E. Bass was born on 6 November 1909 in Mississippi, the son of Robert Fulton Bass, a minister of Marion County, and Florence Elizabeth Bozeman. Family and friends called him Ben. He was one of at least eight children. His father died in 1921, when Shelby was twelve, and his mother raised the family alone. When Shelby died in 1979 he still had three sisters and two brothers living in Mississippi and a third brother in West Virginia.
By the early 1930s he had gone west to California, where he married Frances L. Gilmore, a New Yorker who had come to California as a girl and lived in San Bernardino from about 1923. Their son Robert Arvil Bass was born in Los Angeles County on 30 May 1934, a daughter, Linda Marie Bass, followed on 15 March 1940, and a second daughter, Connie, came after her.
About 1939 the family settled at Highland, a town in the foothills on the eastern edge of San Bernardino, and Shelby lived there for the next forty years. For many years he owned and ran the 5th St. Top Shop. A top shop made and repaired the fabric tops, seats and upholstery of cars. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
His son Robert made a career in the United States Air Force and retired as a master sergeant. Robert came back to San Bernardino about the beginning of 1973 and died there on 11 August 1974, aged forty. His three sons, Duane, James and Russell, were then living at Highland, near their grandfather, and Shelby is named among the survivors in Robert's obituary.
Frances died on 28 January 1970, aged sixty two, and was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino. Shelby married again, and his second wife was named Ena.
Shelby died on Monday, 12 February 1979, in a San Bernardino hospital, aged sixty nine. His obituary in the San Bernardino Sun gave his survivors as his wife, Ena; five daughters, Linda Clark of Oklahoma, Connie Porter of Granada Hills, Karon Erwin of San Bernardino, and Madeline Kelly and Evelyn Fiscalini, both of Highland; three sisters, Bobbie Byrd, Sadie Tullos and Emma, all of Mississippi; and three brothers, Mack and Joseph, both of Mississippi, and Paul of West Virginia. Friends called at the Mark B. Shaw Baseline Chapel, and he was buried after a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino.
