Sherrod Williams

Sherrod Williams, called James Sherrod Williams on his memorial, was born on 20 April 1776. He married Mary Ann Looney, called Polly, born in 1781. They settled in Franklin County, Tennessee, east of Winchester, in the valley called Williams Cove.

They had twenty one children, seventeen sons and four daughters. Twenty grew up. Two of the sons went into politics. Mat Williams sat in the Tennessee legislature in 1861. Jim Williams married Katie Tally and sat in the Alabama legislature for Jackson County.

The family were old Baptists.

He died far from home. His memorial gives 12 September 1831 at Huntsville, Alabama. A grandson-in-law, writing in 1922, said he died "500 miles from home in 35." Five years later two of his sons brought his body home and buried it beside his wife.

A compiled memorial says that as a boy on the Holston River frontier he saw his father, James Williams, killed by Indians outside the walls of a fort in 1782. That story has not been checked against a record.
