Shubael Bearce
Shubael Bearce was the eldest son of James Bearse and his wife Experience. He was born probably by 1688, probably at Barnstable on Cape Cod, where his father lived until about 1700. His grandfather Austin Bearse had come from Southampton in 1638 and was one of the first settlers of Barnstable. About 1700 his father bought land inland at Plympton, and the family moved there.
On 16 November 1709 he married Thankful Ford at Plympton. She was a daughter of Andrew Ford of Abington. Four years later his brother James married her sister Abiah. In 1714 his father deeded him land at Plympton, counted as thirty acres when the old man's estate was settled.
They had six children there between 1712 and 1723. The eldest was Hannah, born 1 September 1712, who married Thomas Bryant at Kingston about twenty years later. Then came five sons: Shubael in 1715, Andrew in 1716, Jacob in 1718, Hezekiah in 1720 and Thomas in 1723.
In 1734 the part of Plympton where they lived was set off as the town of Halifax. On 23 December 1754 "Shubael Bearse and Thankful his wife," with his brother James and her sister Abiah, "all of Halifax," released their interest in eighty one acres at Abington that had come from her father.
He was still living on 22 January 1771, when his son Shubael made his will and called himself "Jr." No probate of his own estate survives. His grandson's grandson was the writer Ambrose Bierce.
