Simeon Paskel Gray Jr.
Simeon Paskel Gray Jr. was born on 30 June 1857 at Burkeville, in Newton County, Texas, the piney woods county on the Sabine River across from Louisiana. The memorial over his grave names his parents as Simeon Paskal Gray Sr., an Alabama man born in 1826 who served in a Texas cavalry regiment of the Confederacy and died in Newton County in 1870, and Mary Elizabeth Cox, who had married him in Henry County, Alabama, on 8 July 1848 and lived until 1922. Simeon Jr. was twelve or thirteen when his father died.
He married Frances J., a Texas girl born in October 1859, and they raised a large family in Newton County. In June 1900 the census found them in Justice Precinct 7: Simeon, 42, Frances J., 40, and their children William T., born November 1875, Matilda J., March 1876, Houston, January 1882, Laura C., December 1886, Nelley, May 1889, Thomas F., October 1891, and Edward M., January 1894. In the same precinct that year lived the family of Frank Denby, whose daughter Laura was then twelve.
His son Houston, Samuel Houston Gray, married Hettie Denby in Jasper County at Christmas 1903. In 1910 Simeon, written S. P. Gray, was in Justice Precinct 1 of Newton County with Frances J. and a houseful of children: William, Ramsey, Alice, Houston, Laura, Nellie, Tom, Jocia and Linnie. He died at Newton on his seventy fifth birthday, 30 June 1932, and was buried in the Ford Cemetery at Newton.
