Socia Hammon
Socia Hammon was born in Scott County, Virginia, about 1826. The census of 1850 gives her age as 20 and her birthplace as Scott County; the census of 1900 gives her birth as August 1826. She married Cornelius H. Baker, called Hick, and in November 1850 the couple were farming in Russell County, Virginia, with a child of two.
She raised at least six children: Samuel, born in 1849, Jackson, Adeline, Caroline, Richard and George. The family crossed into Kentucky in the 1850s and 1860s, and in 1880 Socia Baker, 52, was keeping house on Upper Elkhorn Creek in Pike County with her husband and five of the children. Her son George died in Dickenson County, Virginia, in December 1888, aged 20, and the death record names his parents C. H. and Socia Baker.
Cornelius died in November 1894. In June 1900 Socia was 74, a widow, living in Clintwood district of Dickenson County in the house of her son Samuel, with his second wife Martha and their children. When she died is not known.
Her maiden name comes from her children's death records. Samuel's Kentucky certificate of 1917 gives Socie Hammon, born in North Carolina, and Richard's of 1926 gives Socia Hammond. Adeline's Virginia certificate of 1947 gives Socia Estept.
