Solomon Forbes
Born May 23, 1816 in Grafton County, New Hampshire, the date confirmed by the family Bible, Solomon Forbes was among the earliest American settlers of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, arriving about 1837 with Nathan Forbes. The census takers were less sure where he was born: 1850 and his Michigan death record say New York, 1860 says New Hampshire.
In 1837 he married Hannah Snow, whose family had just come from Oswego County, New York by sleigh. Their daughter Abigail was born in Michigan in 1839 or 1840 and a son Carey about 1841. Hannah died in November 1845. On 23 August 1847, in Van Buren County, he married Minerva Salisbury Bunker. He went to the California gold fields in 1853 and 1854 and kept a diary of the journey.
His son Carey died a prisoner at Andersonville in 1864. On 2 November 1866, at Almena in Van Buren County, he married a third time, Catherine Henry Swick, a widow. He farmed at Oshtemo and died there on July 17, 1896, of kidney trouble, at eighty. He left a widow and seven children, scattered from Kalamazoo County to Nebraska and Kansas. He is buried at Alamo.
