Stephen Saunders

Stephen Saunders of Westerly was a son of Tobias Saunders, and is named in his father's will of 1688 as one of two younger sons to be paid ten pounds each by the elder brothers when they came into the farm.

He married twice. His second wife, married on 19 November 1721, was Rachel Bliven, born in March 1697, daughter of Edward Bliven and Isabel Macoone. He was made a freeman in 1723.

His will was made on 23 October 1746 and proved on 24 November of the same year, with Rachel as executrix. It gives her the profits of all his land while she remains a widow, all his personal estate to dispose of among the daughters as she thinks fit, and leave to sell his salt marsh if she cannot otherwise pay for the farm. The homestead goes to his son Stephen after her death or remarriage, forty acres to his son Tobias, and when Stephen takes the land he is to pay ten pounds to his sister Thankful Stetson, fifty pounds to his brother Peleg, and ten pounds each to his sisters Rachel, Isabel, Ruth, Mary and Martha.

The inventory came to three hundred and ninety four pounds and lists, between the livestock and the loom, a great bed valued at twenty nine pounds and four pounds six shillings of books.
