Stephen Terryberry
Stephen Terryberry came from Germany. His name was first written Durnbercher, Jorenboxger and Durabercher, and later Terberger, Terryberry and Terriberry. He sailed from Rotterdam on the ship Robert and Alice, of Dublin, Walter Goodman master, which stopped at Dover in England before crossing to Philadelphia. The captain counted 106 men, 53 women and 159 people in all. On 11 September 1738 the men were qualified at Philadelphia, taking the oaths to the government at the courthouse before the Lieutenant Governor. Stephen could not write his name and signed with a cross.
Several of his shipmates also appear among the early settlers of German Valley, in the hills of Morris County, New Jersey: Philip Weiss, Leonard Neighbor, the Duffords and Heinrich Shenckle. Hans Michael and Jan Jacob Torenberger, whose name is another spelling of his own, came on the same ship.
In 1747 Stephen leased a farm of 150 acres there, next to the Dufford land. Locally his name appears as "Stofe Terberger". In 1895 the farm belonged to Isaac Sharp Vescelius, who descended from Stephen through his mother.
He married a woman named Anna Mary. He died in 1776, and his will was probated on 25 February 1776. It names his children: Ann Elisabeth, born in 1752, who married Adam Sager on 12 May 1772; Margaret, born in 1755, who probably married John Swackhamer; Mary Godlieben, born in 1758; Philip, who settled on Schooley's Mountain; and George Frederick, who moved to Oxford township in Warren County.
