Susanah Lantz was born on 19 May 1828, in Rockingham County, Virginia, as her memorial gives it. On 28 January 1847, at 18, she married Moses R. Keplinger in Hardy County. The minister Benjamin Stickley listed their wedding in his return to the county clerk, among the couples he married that winter.

They farmed near Maysville, in the part of Hardy County that became Grant County, West Virginia. Their children were Mary Ann (1847), Martin (1849), Jonathan Matthew (1852), Wilson (1855), Anna (1858), Sarah (1861) and Mahala (1863). Consumption, the old name for tuberculosis, went through the family. Sarah died in 1879, Mahala in 1884, Wilson in 1885 and Jonathan in 1891. Moses died of blood poisoning in January 1892, and Martin died of consumption three months later. In 1903 Anna died of it too, at 45.

Susan lived on as a widow at Maysville. She died there of cancer of the stomach on 10 November 1908, aged 80 years, 5 months and 21 days. She is buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Maysville, under a stone that reads "Susan, wife of Moses Keplinger".
