Susanna Hooper

Susanna Hooper was born at Merriott, in Somerset, on 6 May 1703 and baptised there on 8 May, the daughter of John Hooper and his wife Mary. The register reads "Birth 6 May 1703 Susannah, Baptism 8 May 1703 Susannah." For a stretch of years around the turn of that century the Merriott incumbent was entering both the birth and the baptism, which is unusual in an English parish book and is the reason her exact birthday survives at all. Her brother John had been born on 24 December 1697 and christened on 6 January following, and her sister Elizabeth born on 30 November 1700 and christened two days later.

On 7 July 1728, at twenty five, she married John Douch of the same parish. She bore seven children between 1729 and 1749: John in 1729, Hannah in 1731, Mary in 1733, another Mary in 1734, John in 1739, Samuel in 1742 and Samuel in 1749. She buried at least two of them small. The first John was baptised in April 1729 and buried in May, at six weeks. The first Samuel died in 1746 at three and a half. Her last child was baptised on 1 October 1749, when she was forty six. He was the Samuel who married Honour Hutchins of Dinnington in 1778 and lived at Merriott until 1830, and he was buried there at a stated age of eighty three. Her own burial is not known.
