Susanna Keith
Susanna Keith was born at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on 11 April 1753, the seventh of the nine children of Ebenezer Keith and Mary Pierce. The town clerk entered her as "Susanna, ch. Ebenezer and Mary, Apr. 11, 1753." Her great-grandfather was the Rev. James Keith, the town's first minister. On her mother's side she descended from Capt. Michael Pierce of Scituate. Her mother died when she was five, and the next year her father married the widow Hephzibah Carver.
She married Caleb Fobes at Bridgewater on 11 December 1776. The town clerk wrote it as "Caleb and Susanna Keith, Dec. 11, 1776." Mitchell's history of Bridgewater ends her father's entry with "Susanna m. Caleb Fobes 1776." Caleb was her second cousin. Her grandmother Bethiah Fobes and his grandfather Joshua Fobes were sister and brother, children of Deacon Edward Fobes.
Her first son, Cyrus, was born at Bridgewater on 9 July 1777. The next April her father died of smallpox and was buried in his own field. The family then went north to Lyme, in Grafton County, New Hampshire, with the thirty or so Bridgewater households that followed the Rev. William Conant there after 1773. At Lyme she raised Cyrus, Caleb, Solomon and Stella, and probably others.
On 6 October 1815 her husband sold eighteen acres at Lyme for $900, and she wrote under the deed "Consented to by me Susanna Fobes." Her son Caleb Junr was the witness. Nothing later about her is known.
Her name went on. Her son Caleb is said to have named a daughter Susan Keith Forbes, born in 1819.
