Susannah Fitch

Susannah Fitch was born at Lunenburg on 18 February 1746/7, the fifth child of John Fitch and his wife Susannah. She was sixteen months old when a raiding party burned her father's garrison house, and she was carried to Montreal with the rest of the family and held there until they were ransomed. Her mother died on the way home, at Providence, and Susannah was raised by her father's second wife.

On 2 June 1770 she married Joshua Chase at Shirley. They had twelve children. The first five were born at Shirley and the rest at Chesterfield, in New Hampshire, where the family moved in the 1770s. Two of the children, a William and a George, died as infants in 1778, and the next two sons were given the same names again.

In 1790 the household at Chesterfield was counted as two males over sixteen, two males under sixteen and four females.

They moved again, west into New York, and settled at Massena in St Lawrence County on the Canadian border, about fifty miles from the town her family had been taken to as prisoners. Her husband died there on 11 March 1810. She lived at Massena another seventeen years and died on 10 July 1827, at eighty.
