Thomas Aud
Thomas Aud was born on 28 March 1748 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, by the records of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The DAR is a society of women descended from people who served the cause of independence. It keeps a database of the patriots its members have proved, and he is ancestor A003737 there. St. Mary's County, on the lower Western Shore, was where Maryland's first colonists landed in 1634, and it stayed a heartland of the colony's English Catholics. The DAR counts him a private in Captain Roach's company of the St. Mary's County militia, from the published Maryland militia lists.
He married Priscilla Duvall in Maryland. That comes from Ben. J. Webb's history of the Catholic Church in Kentucky, published in 1884: "The name of his wife, whom he married in Maryland, was Priscilla Duvall." The DAR record names one wife, Priscilla Duval. His son James was born in Maryland on 20 July 1780.
After the Revolution, Catholic families from Maryland moved in numbers to Kentucky and settled around Bardstown in Nelson County. The Auds were in Nelson County by 1795. On 31 December that year Thomas Brewer married "Catharine Aud, daughter of Thomas Aud" in Nelson County, with a consent filed. Webb lists Thomas and Zachariah Aud among the heads of family of the Catholic settlement on Cox's Creek, around Fairfield, in 1800.
His sons married from there, and the marriage bonds show him at their side. A Kentucky groom gave a bond, with a surety, that there was no lawful bar to the match. Zachariah married Margaret Warthen, a widow, on 17 November 1800. James married Ann Moore on 26 February 1803, and the bond reads "AUD, James. (Son of Thomas)" with "Surety, Thomas Aud". Philip married Susannah Hagan on 8 July 1806, with Thomas Aud as a witness. Zachariah's son Athanasius, born in 1803, became a priest. Webb wrote: "Thomas Aud, named in the list of settlers on Cox's creek, was the grandfather of Father Aud."
Thomas made his will on 4 December 1821. It is known from a compiled transcription that cites Nelson County Will Book E, page 53. He left a third of his estate "to my wife Priscilla Aud during her natural life, after that to be equally divided among my children ... my sons and daughter Zachariah, Ambrose, James, Philip, Thomas and Joseph Aud and Catherine Brewer my daughter ... It is my wish and will that Ambrose Aud my son herein named do not receive his part to squander away, but to be kept in the hands of my Executors to clothe & feed him comfortably. Item 4th. It is my wish and will that my negro man George at my death may choose a trade for himself and to be bound to serve four years and then be free. Item 5th. I wish and will that my negro girl Lydia Ann to be free at the age of twenty-five to remain in the care of Zachariah Aud till that age". He named Zachariah and Thomas as executors.
He died in Nelson County on 11 May 1823, by the DAR record. Zachariah gave his executor's bond on 19 May 1823, with Thomas Aud and James Knott as sureties. The appraisers met at Thomas's house on 2 June 1823 to value the estate.
His son James took the family on west. By 1818 James was in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and by 1836 in White County, Illinois, where he died in 1840.
