Thomas Colville

Thomas Colville was born in Knox County, Ohio, on 9 November 1818, the son of James Colville and Mary Jackson. His father had been the first settler of Pleasant Township, in 1803, and was one of the county's early associate judges. He was one of eight children. His father died in 1837 and his mother in 1851.

The History of Knox County, published in 1881 while he was living, gives his life in a few lines: "born in Knox county, Ohio, November 9, 1818; he married Miss Sarah Patrick in 1847, born in Mt. Vernon in March, 1825, daughter of Uriah and Delilah Patrick. They settled on his father's home farm ... They have five children, three sons and two daughters. He has filled the office of justice of the peace in Pleasant township since April, 1875." A justice of the peace was the township's local magistrate, who heard small cases and witnessed legal papers.

Thomas and Sarah had five children. William Thomas, born in 1849, became a professor at Kenyon College. Robert Woods, born in 1851, became a doctor at Mount Vernon. Jessie Ellen was born in 1854 and married a Starr. Charles Franklin, born in 1858, graduated from Kenyon in 1880, became a lawyer and was mayor of Mount Vernon from 1894 to 1896. Jean, called Jennie, was born in 1864 and married W. H. Herrick.

The 1880 census lists Thomas as a farmer in Pleasant Township, with his son William, then teaching at Kenyon, living at home. Thomas died in 1895. He is buried at Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon, under a flat stone he shares with Sarah: "SARAH PATRICK / THOMAS COLVILLE / 1825-1913 / 1818-1895." A COLVILLE family monument stands in the plot. Sarah survived him by eighteen years.
