Thomas Curtis
Thomas Curtis was born at Farmington in 1739 and married Martha Cowles at Torrington on 7 January 1762. They settled at Norfolk, where he was constable in 1775.
On 1 February 1776 he enlisted as a corporal in Captain Titus Watson's 8th Company of Colonel Charles Burrall's battalion, raised to reinforce the Northern Army. He died on 18 August 1776 at Stillwater, New York, of smallpox or camp distemper, and is buried in the old graveyard at Norfolk. He was thirty seven, and he left five children under thirteen.
His gravestone stands in Center Cemetery at Norfolk: "In Memory of Mr Thomas Curtis who died at Stillwater Aug. 18 1776 AE 37."
He was probably a son of Captain Zebulon Curtis of Farmington and Torrington, who married Lydia Cole in 1735. Zebulon's first child, Elizabeth, was born in 1737, and the next child recorded at Torrington was Job, in 1745. Thomas, born in 1739, fits the gap, and the Cowles genealogy and Find a Grave both make him Zebulon's son. No record found says so. Zebulon outlived him by twenty two years and died at Torrington in 1798, aged eighty eight.
