Thomas Grant, baptized at Hessle in the East Riding of Yorkshire on 12 February 1600/1, the register entering him as Thomas Graunt the sonne of John. He married Jane Haburne at Cottingham, five miles up the road, on 21 September 1624, and all of their children were christened in that parish.

The first was a Jane, baptized on 8 March 1625/6 and buried four days later on the 12th. After her came John in March 1627/8, George in April 1629, Hannah on 16 October 1631, Frances in June 1634 and Anna in December 1637. Hannah went to Massachusetts and married Edward Hazen at Rowley in March 1650, when she was nineteen; Anna married Robert Emerson, a native of Cadney in Lincolnshire, which was Edward Hazen's own parish.

He followed his daughters to New England and is on record as Thomas Grant of Rowley in Essex County. His sons' names run back into his own family, John for his father and George for his elder brother, and it is largely on that pattern that his parentage rests, since no will has been found to confirm it.
