Thomas Hayward

d. 1681
Died 1681

Thomas Hayward came from England and settled at Duxbury, in Plymouth Colony, before 1638. Mitchell's history of Bridgewater says he "came from England in the same vessel with John Ames and settled in Duxbury before 1638; was made a freeman 1646; was an original proprietor, and among the earliest and eldest of the settlers of Bridgewater, he d. 1681; his will dated 1678; no wife living".

A freeman was a man admitted to the full rights of the colony, including the vote. He was made one in 1646. He was one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater, the men who held the first shares in the purchase of its lands, and he moved there with the first settlers.

His children, by Mitchell, were Thomas, Nathaniel, John, Joseph and Elisha, and two daughters: Mary, the wife of Edward Mitchell, and Martha, the wife of John Howard. His son Thomas became an Assistant of the colony, one of the magistrates who sat with the governor, and died of a fall from his horse in 1698. Martha's husband kept the licensed tavern at West Bridgewater.

He made his will in 1678, with no wife then living, and died in 1681.
