Thomas Hendry, also written Henry, came from Scotland to Vermont in 1801 with his wife, aboard the ship Phoenix. On the same voyage came the Wallace and Fulton families of Newbury, the Robens family and Andrew Buchanan of Ryegate, the McNabs of Barnet and others. They were joining the Scots who had been settling Ryegate and Barnet, on the upper Connecticut River, since the 1770s.

He lived first at Newbury and then at Barnet. He was a moulder by trade, a man who cast iron in sand moulds, and he worked for several years at Brandon, in Rutland County, where some of his children settled. He was known for his skill in keeping bees.

His first wife died, and on 19 September 1811 he married Mary, daughter of Samuel Lindsay of Newbury. Between 1830 and 1840 they lived on the Wright farm in Ryegate. He died at Forestdale in 1868. The Barnet history of 1923 says he had moved to Connecticut; Forestdale is also the name of the iron-working village at Brandon.

Not all his children's names are known. His daughter Nancy, born at Barnet about 1816, married Sidney Kelley in 1833 and died at Brandon in 1851; she was probably a daughter of the second marriage. Eliza married George Barker of Newbury about 1847 and died at Proctor in 1881. Jean W., a daughter of the second marriage, married John C. Barker of Hartford, Connecticut. One son served in the 1st Vermont Regiment in the Civil War and later as a captain in the 7th.
