One of the original grantees of the township of Yarmouth, there from 1638 or 1639, and before that at Salem for two years with his wife Mary and three sons, the youngest of whom was born on the passage over. He was constable in August 1644 and then deputy to the General Court for 1652, 1653, 1658, 1659, 1660, 1661, 1662 and after, which is most of the town's first generation of representation.

His will is dated 26 September 1665 and names his sons Joseph, Thomas and Jeremiah and his wife Mary, who administered the estate in the following March and outlived him by seventeen years.

An English descent is claimed for him in the 1898 volume that also repeated the refuted Sears pedigree: a father Thomas and a grandfather Robert, a Norfolk manor called Morningthorpe, and a John Howse who was sheriff of the county and changed the spelling of the name after a mistake in a legal document. None of it is proved.
