Thomas Lettice was at Plymouth by 1638. Savage suggests, without insisting, that he may be the passenger in the Elizabeth out of London in 1635, aged twenty-three, whom the custom house entered as Lettyne. That would put his birth about 1612. The name is written Lettis and Lettice in the colony records and Lettuce in the Cole genealogy. His English parish, his parents and his trade are not known.

His wife was Ann. He made a will in 1678 naming her, and it was proved on 25 October 1681. His only son Thomas died on 3 November 1650 and he probably had no other, so everything of his that survives runs through daughters. The three of them had six husbands between them. Ann married Samuel Jenney. Elizabeth married William Shurtleff on 18 October 1655, then Jacob Cook on 18 November 1669, then Hugh Cole of Swansea on 1 January 1689. Dorothy married Edward Gray on 12 December 1665 and afterwards Captain Nathaniel Clark.

Elizabeth's third marriage was one of two between this family and the Coles in the same generation. Hugh Cole was a brother of James Cole junior, whose son John married Elizabeth's niece Susannah Gray. The Cole genealogy names Elizabeth outright as the daughter of Thomas and Ann Lettuce.
