Thomas Lindley

b. 1755 · Pennsylvania → Georgia → Laurens District SC
Born 1755, probably Orange County, North Carolina
Children include Mary

Thomas Lindley was the eldest son of Capt. James Lindley of Reaburn's Creek, a Crown justice and Loyalist militia captain. His mother was very probably Mary Cox, whom his father married in Orange County, North Carolina, in 1754. Thomas was born about 1755, probably in Orange County. He came to the Ninety Six District of South Carolina as a boy, when his family moved there early in 1768.

His father stayed with the King and was killed in the Revolution. Thomas served on the other side. A DAR record places him on the roll of Capt. Hewett Sullivan's Company of Scouts in 1781. His mother took the younger children back to North Carolina. His sisters were Rebecca, who married David Smith, and Mary, who married Colville Abercrombie. His younger brothers were William and Jonathan.

South Carolina followed primogeniture until 1791, and his father's land came to him as heir at law. On 15 May 1785 he sold 100 acres of it to Marmaduke Pinson, styling himself "Son and heir of James Lindley." His wife Elizabeth signed with him. In 1803 he was sued as administrator of his father's estate.

He was a blacksmith with a mill on Raburn's Creek. He and Elizabeth had twelve children. In 1800 the census of Laurens District counted him as a man over forty five, with one woman between twenty six and forty five, and three girls under ten. On the same page were his sister's husband Colville Abercrombie and their neighbours Edward Nash and Abraham Bolt.

He made his will by mark on 18 October 1809. Colville Abercrombie was one of the witnesses. The will was proved on 6 January 1810, so he died in the eleven weeks between.

In the twentieth century three DAR applications made him the father of his own sisters. They gave him a birth in Pennsylvania in 1730, three wives and a marriage in 1761, none of which any record supports. His name is on the DAR monument raised at Laurens in 1959.
