Thomas Nimrod Craig
Thomas Nimrod Craig was born on 11 September 1870 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. His father was John Henry Craig, also a Tennessean. His mother's name was not known to his family by the time he died.
He married Annie Burnett on 15 May 1891 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the county of Nashville. They had four children: Janette Mae 'Nettie' Craig (1892 to 1949), later Turner; Charles Thomas Craig (1894 to 1937); Minnie Leola Craig (1896 to 1959), later Clark; and James Walter Craig (1898 to 1973), born in Nashville.
In 1900 the family was living in Nashville: Thomas, Annie, and the four children Nettie M., Charles, Minnie and James W. The census recorded that he and Annie had been married nine years.
The family later moved to Columbus, Georgia, a cotton mill town on the Chattahoochee River, where his son James worked as a loom fixer from about 1914. Thomas spent his working life in textiles. In 1937 he and Annie lived at 3530 River Road in Columbus, and their son Charles lived with them.
At 66 Thomas was still working in the mills. In the spring of 1937 he hurt his hand at the Exposition Cotton Mills in Atlanta, where his son James was a loom fixer. He stuck the eye of a needle into the back of his hand. The puncture festered, and the infection spread into his blood. Dr. J. C. Wooldridge of Columbus treated him from 29 March. Thomas died at home on River Road at 11:50 on 11 May 1937, of septicaemia with abscesses, with septic meningitis and acute nephritis. He was 66 years and 8 months old.
He was buried the next day in Section 9 of Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, under a flat stone that reads 'T N Craig, Sept 11 1870, May 11 1937'. His son Charles, who had reported his death, died at the veterans' hospital in Atlanta on the last day of the same year.
