Thomas Payne
Thomas Payne was a weaver of Wrentham, a village on the Suffolk coast. A family record of his life survived, and Savage, who used it, called it "a very trustworthy anc. docum." It names him as the son of Thomas and Catharine Payne of Cookley, near Halesworth in Suffolk. It gives his birth on 11 December 1586 and his marriage to his wife Elizabeth on 22 November 1610.
The same record lists eight children. Mary was born on 12 October 1611 and Thomas on 18 January 1613. Elizabeth followed on 20 January 1615, then Peter on 14 March 1617, who probably died young. Dorothy was born on 6 December 1618, John on 26 August 1620 and Sarah on 7 March 1622. Nathaniel, the last, was born on 21 July 1626 and died before he was ten.
In 1637, at fifty, he took the family to New England. They sailed from Yarmouth in the Mary Ann: Thomas, his wife Elizabeth, aged fifty three, and six children, the youngest fifteen.
They settled at Salem, where he had a grant of land in 1637. He made his will on 10 April 1638, and the family record says he died in 1640. A Thomas Payne was made a freeman on 2 June 1641; Savage thought that was more likely his son. His daughter Mary married Philemon Dickinson. His son Thomas settled at Dedham.
