Timothy Carter
Timothy Carter was born in Massachusetts, the son of John Carter, who lived his whole life there. A county history printed in 1913 gives his birth year as 1804. He married Charlotte Wilson in Massachusetts, and the two went west as early settlers of Knox County, Ohio. Timothy was a wagon maker by trade, and he farmed as well. Eleven children were born to them. The sixth, Hosea B. G. Carter, was born in Knox County on 3 November 1839.
In 1844 Timothy moved the family again, to Eaton County, Michigan. It was "then almost an unbroken wilderness." The forest where they settled was so dense and so large that Timothy "had to mark a trail to reach and leave his home." He bought 160 acres and cleared them, and he lived on that land until a short time before his death, which came near Eaton Rapids. He kept up the wagon making alongside the farming and was "quite successful in both lines." He was a Whig and then a Republican, a very enthusiastic one, and gave the party "staunch allegiance" for the rest of his life.
In the census of 1850 the family was at Eaton Rapids: Timothy, 51, born in Massachusetts; Charlotte, 47, born in Massachusetts; Silas N., 13, and Hosea, 10, both born in Ohio; Ruby E., 8, born in Ohio; and Ruth E., 6, born in Michigan the year they came. A memorial gives his death as 1866. By 1913 only two of the eleven children were living, Hosea in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, and Silas N. Carter, a farmer in Eaton County.
