Tollev Michelsen

Born about 1739 and confirmed at Gaaserud in Sande in July 1756. On 22 September 1765 he married Kari Joensdatter, and the pair kept house at Skuggerud, a place under Klevjer, and later at Klevjer ejet, the cotter's ground of that farm.

At the baptism of his daughter Anne on 23 June 1776 the clerk entered his occupation as matros, sailor. Sande sits on the Drammensfjord in Vestfold, in the country that supplied crews to the Norwegian and Danish merchant fleet all through the century, and a matros with a plot under a farm is a common enough shape of life there: the ground fed the family and the sea paid for the rest.

Four of his children are on the register: Michel in 1767, Jon in 1770, Anders in 1773 and Anne in 1776. He was dead by February 1801, when his widow is entered at Klevjer as a widow of a first marriage working land in her own right, with three of those children grown and in the house. His burial has not been found. His own father was a Michel, named in nothing read.
