Virena Jane Hodges
Virena Jane Hodges grew up on her father's farm on the head waters of Boyds Creek in Sevier County, Tennessee, the eldest of her mother's six children. She was still a girl when her father made his will in June 1841 and set aside four dollars for her schooling and, with her three sisters, twenty dollars for a saddle and a cloak, and ten dollars for a cow to be handed over when she came of age or married. She married within a few years of that, and the man was Samuel W. Randles, a deputy sheriff of the county.
She had six children between about 1844 and about 1856 and then died young, before the summer of 1860, while the last of them was still small. Four of the six carry names out of her own family: Joseph and Martha after her brother and sister, James Wiley after her brother Wiley, and Mary Jane after herself. Her son James gave his first daughter the name Virene Jennie in 1876, and that granddaughter carried it out of the mountains to Texas and lived with it until 1964.
