Walter Gaylord

Walter Gaylord was one of the sons Deacon William Gaylord brought out of Somerset as a child in 1630, and he spent his life at Windsor. Savage says all the deacon's children were born in England except the youngest, John, so Walter came over small enough to remember nothing of Crewkerne.

He married twice. On 29 April 1648 he married Mary, daughter of Deacon Edward Stebbins of Hartford, and she bore him five children in nine years: Joseph in 1649, Mary in 1651, Joanna in 1653, Benjamin in 1655 and Isaac in June 1657. She died on 29 June 1657, eight days after that last birth. He married Sarah, daughter of William Rockwell, on 22 March 1658 by Savage or 22 March 1659 by Stiles, and had Eliezur in 1662 and Sarah in 1665. Sarah Rockwell died in August 1683 and he outlived her by six years.

He held a house lot in the Palisado, the stockaded square at the centre of Windsor that the town had thrown up during the Pequot war and kept afterwards. The land records place him there: when the town granted James Eno a strip in November 1663 to build a shop on and barber in, the western boundary of that strip was Walter Gaylord's fence. He appears on the old book of rates among the men having a family, a horse and two oxen.

He died on 9 August 1689.
