Walter Waters Plant
Walter Waters Plant was born in 1865, the son of Joseph Plant, a woodsman and Civil War veteran. On 1 May 1885, at Fayette, he married Elizabeth Ela, a daughter of the circuit-riding preacher Roger Ela and of Phebe Wadsworth of Moose Hill, and they farmed on Moose Hill, near the church, where their four children were born, Nettie Estelle first in March 1886.
His daughter remembered him at ninety: "He was 6 feet 2 and rugged and had fine common sense." He worked sixteen-hour days for a dollar and came home singing. "I remember my father bought the first mowing machine in this part of the country and people came from miles around to see it. Everyone was mowing with a hand scythe, you see." He had not had his wife's schooling, Nettie said, and cherished learning the more for it: he took her up on the bed beside him and taught her her letters and numbers before she was two.
Elizabeth died at Livermore Falls in November 1943. He died in 1947, aged about eighty-two, and is buried with her at Moose Hill Cemetery.
