William C. Smith
William C. Smith was born about 1828 in Pennsylvania and farmed in Cambria County, on the mountain side of the state where the Conemaugh runs down through Johnstown. The 1870 census has him at forty-two, head of household 187 in the first ward of Johnstown, with his wife Harriet and five children in the house and an eighteen year old girl named Mary Beam living with them. The eldest boy on that page is seventeen year old Wm R Smith, who would grow up to marry Alma and keep the Aspinwall household eighty miles west.
By 1880 he had moved the family out of the town and into Jackson Township, a few miles north, where the census names him plainly as a farmer, fifty-two years old, with Harriet keeping house and the three youngest boys still at home. His own father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Maryland, which is as far back as any known record reaches.
He is known because two of his sons wrote his name down. The eldest gave it to a Florida undertaker in 1929; the youngest gave it to the Social Security Administration in 1957, eighty-six years after he was born in Johnstown. Neither knew what the other had said, and both said the same two names.
