William Chandler
William Chandler came from England to Roxbury, Massachusetts, about 1637, with his wife Annis and four small children: Thomas, Hannah, John and William. A fifth child, Sarah, was born at Roxbury.
He was a small landholder. A list of the estates of Roxbury made between 1638 and 1640 gave him 22 acres and seven persons in his household. He kept one goat and one kid, fewer than all but two of his neighbours, and paid Goodwife Burt's boy twelve pence a head to keep them. He took the freeman's oath in 1640, and he was named among the first proprietors of Andover with his son Thomas and his son-in-law George Abbot. Tradition held that a Roxbury tannery began as his in 1640.
For nearly a year he lay sick with consumption. He died at Roxbury on 26 January 1642, by the calendar then in use the 26th of the eleventh month of 1641. The church record calls him "a Christian, Godly brother."
After his death Annis married John Dane, who took on the family's debts and brought up the children. In 1649 the General Court settled William's house and land on Dane, because he had "paid more debts of Chandler than the house and land was worth." Hannah married George Abbot of Andover and then the Rev. Francis Dane, her stepfather's son. Thomas, John and William settled at Andover.
