William Douglas Evans
William Douglas Evans was born in Oneida County, New York, about 1849. The records disagree on the town. His daughter Josephine's birth certificate gives Clayville and the year 1851. His son's birth certificate of 1889 and another son's death certificate of 1920 give Utica. The censuses put his birth in 1849 or 1850.
His parents were Samuel Evans and Phoebe James, both born in Wales. In the 1855 state census a Saml Evans and his wife Phobe were living in the Third Ward of Utica with children John, Elizabeth, Frances and William, the last born about 1849. This was probably William Douglas as a boy. His sister Frances later lived in Chicago too, and died there in 1920.
On 24 January 1886 he married Mercer Pool Little at Indianapolis, in Marion County, Indiana. She had been born in New Brunswick, Canada. One of the marriage indexes names the parents on both sides: Saml. Evans and Phoebe, and Jno. Little and Catherine McNeal.
They made their home in Chicago. Their daughter Josephine Sherman was born there on 27 January 1888, and at least eight more children followed. In the 1900 census the household in Chicago held William D., his wife Mercer, and children Esther, Josephine, Humphrey, Dorothy, George, Agnes, Meredith, Mercer and Elizabeth. The family was still in Chicago in 1910 and 1920. Their son William Douglas Jr., born on 10 July 1900, died in Chicago on 29 July 1920, aged twenty, and was buried in Oakwoods Cemetery.
His occupation does not appear in the indexes. By 1930 he and Mercer had moved east, to Queens, New York. Three unmarried daughters, Dorothy, Mercer and Elizabeth, were living with them. Their daughter Josephine was living at Greenwich, Connecticut.
In December 1934 Josephine's husband, Osbert Croome Roach, died at Bronxville. Six weeks later, on 15 January 1935, William Douglas Evans died in Manhattan. His burial place is not known. His wife was buried at Chappaqua, New York, in 1943, and he is probably there too.
