William Edward Harmon
William Edward Harmon was born on 24 November 1899 on the family farm in Mills County, Texas. His parents were Maud Trox Harmon and Virene Jennie Randle, whom his obituary calls M. T. and Virena Jane Randles Harmon. He grew up with three brothers, John, Duke and Jim, and two sisters, Katie Lee and Arleta.
He married Lois Spinks at Goldthwaite on 4 March 1922. They were married for seventy-seven years, until her death in March 1999. Their first child, Norma Lee, was born that August. A second daughter, Christine, was born and died on 12 December 1929, and another daughter followed in 1931. The censuses of 1930 and 1940 find the household together, and in 1930 his widowed mother was living with them.
He farmed all his life, in Mills, Hamilton and Comanche counties. For three years he homesteaded in New Mexico, though the obituary does not say when. He went on driving his own car, keeping a garden and raising cattle until he was ninety-seven.
He died at Hamilton General Hospital on Saturday, 6 September 2003, at a hundred and three. He was living at Carlton by then. His daughter Norma Lee had died three months before him. The funeral was held at the Rutledge-Jones Funeral Home in Hico on the Monday, and he was buried in the Carlton Cemetery, where Lois lies.
