William Franklin Hopkins
William Franklin Hopkins was born on 10 March 1888 near Doniphan, the county seat of Ripley County in the Missouri Ozarks, on the Current River just above the Arkansas line. His obituary says he spent most of his childhood in Missouri.
On 20 February 1911 he married Della Mae Kassinger of Poplar Bluff in Butler County. The license was issued in Butler County on 19 January 1911, when he gave his age as 22 and Della hers as 24. They had at least four children who grew up: William Ezra in 1913, Edith in 1914, Ruth in 1916 and Frank Marvin in 1920.
When he registered for the World War I draft in 1917 or 1918 he was a married man living at Doniphan, of medium height and build, with auburn hair and gray eyes. By the next war he had settled at Flatwoods, a small place in Ripley County. When he registered again in 1942, at fifty-four, he gave his occupation as trucking, his height as 5 feet 7 inches and his weight as 135 pounds. That same February his youngest son Frank, then 21, named W. F. Hopkins of Flatwoods as his employer.
Della died on 18 January 1946 and was buried at Springhill Cemetery in Flatwoods Township. William later went west to Norwood, a ranching town on the high plateau of San Miguel County in southwestern Colorado. The family called him Pop. He died at 10 a.m. on Monday 29 June 1970 at his home in Norwood, aged 82, and his obituary ran in the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel the next day. He is buried in Norwood Cemetery under a flat stone that reads "We love you" above the name "W. F. 'Pop' Hopkins, 1888 - 1970."
