William Goodwin
William Goodwin was born in North Carolina about 1782. A history of the family printed by the Lowndes County Historical and Genealogical Society in 1998 makes him the first-born son of Theophilus Goodwin and Rebecca Bledsoe. Theophilus had joined the Continental Army in North Carolina at 19 and fought the British at Stono Ferry, outside Charleston, South Carolina, in 1779. The family later moved to Rocky Creek in the Edgefield District of South Carolina.
In 1807, the same history says, William married Mary Turner, a daughter of Henry C. Turner, in Edgefield District. Land there had grown scarce, and like thousands of South Carolinians they went west to Alabama. They settled in Butler County about 1824 or 1825. The history names seven of their children: Harriett, born in 1810, and John M., born in 1812, both in South Carolina; Simpson, born in 1817; Nancy Jane, born in 1824; Henry C.; Lucinda; and W. R.
In 1850 William Goodwin, 68, a planter born in North Carolina, was living in Lowndes County, Alabama, with Mary, 58, born in South Carolina. At home were Henry C., 24, Nancy, 26, Lucinda, 20, and William R., 16, who was also farming. Two doors away lived Elvira Howard, 22, who married Henry C. Goodwin in January 1852. Henry was the Clabe Goodwin whose son George Albert Goodwin farmed in Butler County until 1937.
The family history says William and Mary moved from Butler County into Lowndes County near Palmyra and Braggs Store. William died sometime between 1850 and 1860. He and Mary are buried in the Poole Cemetery, just inside Lowndes County north of the Butler County line.
