William M. Moore
William M. Moore was born on 2 December 1848 in Missouri. His father, Timothy Moore, was born in Kentucky, and his mother, Malinda Tinker, in Tennessee. He lived all his life in the country around Van Buren, the seat of Carter County, on the Current River in the Missouri Ozarks.
On 30 September 1871 he married Elizabeth Frances Hanger in Carter County. She was a daughter of Peter Adams Hanger, who had been shot by Union soldiers in the snow in 1865. William farmed, and the couple raised nine children: John L., born 1872; Luke Allen, born 1874 in Reynolds County; Firman Deloes, 1875; Mary Elizabeth, called Aunt Molly, 1877; Ida Mae, 1879; Robert Burns, 1883; George, 1885, who died in 1908; Walter, called Dick, 1891; and Austin, called Hob, 1895.
In March 1913 the old couple were living a few miles below Van Buren, at the Lee and Cotton farm. William fell ill with la grippe and pneumonia first, on 8 March. Elizabeth took sick about a week later. She died on the morning of 20 March and was buried in the cemetery near town that afternoon. The Van Buren paper reported that her husband lay "at the point of death and is not expected to survive long."
William died at nine in the evening on Saturday, 22 March 1913, aged 64. He was buried the next day beside his wife. The paper wrote that he "had been a resident of this neighborhood a number of years and had lived all his life near here, being known and well liked by all our people." It added: "His life was that of the upright, honest, conscientious citizen and naught can be said against it either publicly or privately." Five sons and two daughters survived them: John L., then county collector, Luke, Robert, Walter and Austin, Miss Ida, and Mrs. James Bowen.
