William Orr

1782-1844 · Ryegate MT
Born 1782, Ryegate, Caledonia County, Vermont
Died 1844

William Orr was born in Ryegate on 10 November 1782, the eldest child of John Orr, who had come from Scotland in 1774, and Sarah Mills of Chester, New Hampshire.

About 1803 he married Rachel Rodgers. She had come to America as a servant in the household of the Rev. William Gibson, a minister of the Reformed Presbyterian church. The couple lived in the west part of the town, near his father. The History of Ryegate says William built the stone house there, where Frank Hooper lived in 1913. The same book, in another place, credits the house to his father.

William and Rachel had eight children. James was born on 25 January 1804. Mary followed in 1806 and married Nathaniel Nutt of Topsham. William was born in 1807, Jane in 1809, Sarah in 1811, then Annie, and Margaret in 1817. The youngest, John, born on 18 December 1818, was so tall that he was called "Long John" and placed near the head of the company at the old militia trainings.

William belonged to the Reformed Presbyterian church. He died on 19 June 1844. Rachel lived another twenty one years and died on 30 April 1865.
