William Richard Limerick
William Richard Limerick, called Will, was born on 30 September 1881 in Smith County, in the piney woods of East Texas around Tyler. He married Susie Lutisha Luce, a girl from Mount Sylvan in the same county, seven years younger than he was.
In the census of 1910 Will and Susie were living at Mount Sylvan with their first son, Richard Franklin, born in 1909. The Texas birth certificate of the boy names his parents as William Richard Limerick and Susie Lutessie Luce. Hampton, called Billy, followed in February 1911, Charley Will on 12 March 1913 at Edom, just over the line in Van Zandt County, and Violet Marie in 1915.
A studio photograph of the young family survives from about 1912. Will stands at the right in a dark suit and tie, and Susie at the left in a high-collared white blouse and long dark skirt. Their two small boys, Richard and Billy, stand between them on top of a carved wooden stand.
Will registered for the draft in the First World War. In 1942, at sixty, he registered again, in the draft of older men, at Chandler in Henderson County. By then his son Charley had been a soldier for at least seven years.
His son Billy died in June 1943, at thirty two. Will died two years later, on 15 July 1945, at Lindale in Smith County, a month before the end of the Second World War. He was buried in Morman Cemetery at Chandler, where Billy lies too. His stone reads: "William (Will) Limerick, 1881, 1945, Resting in Peace." Susie outlived him by thirty seven years.
