William Smith
William Smith was born in April 1822 in Ohio and was seventy-eight when the census of June 1900 found him heading a farm household in Osage Township, Lincoln County, Oklahoma Territory, in the country opened to settlement by the land run of 1891. With him were his wife Alice, thirty-one, born in Kansas, and three boys: Orville, eleven, born in Kansas in December 1888, entered as his son; Dudley, eight, born in the Cherokee Nation in June 1892; and McClelland, six, born in Oklahoma in January 1894. Orville's own later papers put his birth in Bourbon County, in southeastern Kansas, on 1 December 1887, so the family was there then, crossed into the Indian Territory within four years, and was in the new Oklahoma Territory two years after that.
Alice, forty-seven years younger than her husband, was nineteen when Orville was born. She may have been his mother or a second wife who raised him; the census as read does not say. Nothing else has been found of William, before Kansas or after 1900, and in a county full of Smiths the trail is thin.
William was dead or gone by April 1930. That spring Alice Smith, born in Kansas about 1869, was keeping house at Agra, the Lincoln County town where Orville's daughter Helen had been born, with her son Dudley, a widower of thirty-eight, and three children, Christina, Morris and Max.
