William Wells came to Southold on Long Island in 1640 and was one of the founders of the town.

He sat as a councillor at the Hempstead Convention. Long Island was then the county of Yorkshire, divided into ridings, and he was High Sheriff of the eastern riding until 1669. His son's gravestone calls him "William Wells Esqr."

He married first Bridget, the widow of Henry Tuthill. She had no children by him and was dead by 1654. About 1656 her son John Tuthill gave him a release for his share of "the estate of Henry Tuthill, his late father, deceased, and Bridget Tuthill, his mother, also deceased."

About 1654 he married second Mary, "or 'Marie' as she herself wrote it, whose family name is said to be Youngs." Their son William was born on 5 May 1660.

He died in 1671. Mary afterwards married Thomas Mapes. In 1681 his son William married Elizabeth Tuthill, a granddaughter of his first wife.
