Winifred Starling
Winifred Starling married Thomas Camp in Virginia in 1738. She was the first of his two wives and, by a Camp family history of 1963, "the mother of eleven sons and one daughter."
Her children came every two years for more than two decades: Edmund in 1739, Joseph in 1741, John in 1743, Nathaniel in 1745, Thomas in 1747, Starling in 1749, Hosea in 1751, William in 1753, Alfred in 1755, Benjamin in 1757, Elizabeth in 1759 and Joel in 1761. Another list adds daughters Mary, born in 1740, and Lucy, born in 1742.
She was born on 8 February 1716/17, by one account, and died in 1761, the year of her last child. About 1762 Thomas married Margaret Carney, an eighteen-year-old from Ireland who was younger than Winifred's three eldest sons.
Her surname stayed in the family as a given name. Her sixth son was Starling Camp. Her son John named a son Starling in 1771, and John's daughter Sarah, who married Thomas G. Graydon in South Carolina, had children named Sterling and Winiford.
