Agnes Christine Blalack
Agnes Christine Blalack was born on 20 January 1901 at Rogersville, Missouri, a small town on the line between Greene and Webster counties, east of Springfield. She was the eldest child of John Thomas Blalack, a blacksmith, and Mattie Elizabeth Turner, who had married the year before. Her brothers George Thomas and Lawrence Jack followed in 1903 and 1910.
In 1910 the family was living in the third ward of Iola, Allen County, Kansas. The census that year lists John Blalack, 34, Mattie, 25, Agnes, 9, George, 6, and Lawrence, a baby under a year. Within two years they were back in the Missouri Ozarks. Her father died in West Benton Township, Webster County, on 6 August 1912, when Agnes was eleven. He was buried at Kelley Chapel Cemetery near Springfield.
Agnes married Jesse Fillmore Jackson, a man fourteen years older, born at Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1887. They had five children. Charles George, the only son, was born on 20 June 1920. Edith Chestine followed at Pawhuska, Osage County, Oklahoma, on 17 May 1923. Then came Elizabeth Faye, Florence Mae on 12 March 1929, and Betty Charlene at Ochelata on 29 March 1933. Jesse Jackson died at Pawhuska in 1966 and was buried there.
By the spring of 1940 Agnes was married to Paul Bunk Barnett, an Arkansas man seven years younger. The census found them in Jackson Township, Washington County, Oklahoma, with four of her daughters: Edyth, Florence, Bettie and Fay Jackson. Her son Charles was grown and gone. On 8 June 1940, aged 39, she gave birth at Bartlesville to her sixth child and Paul's only one, Jackie Sue Barnett.
Her children married and settled close by. Edith married James William "Bill" Davis at Bartlesville in 1942. Betty married Leroy Smith in 1951. Charles served in the Second World War as a master sergeant and married Betty Applegate. Jackie married Billy Joe Sires in 1960 and lived at Ochelata. Agnes's mother, by then Mattie Duke, spent her last years in Washington County as well.
Mattie Elizabeth Duke died at Bartlesville on 5 April 1984, at 101. Agnes died at Bartlesville fifteen days later, on 20 April 1984, aged 83. She was buried at Ochelata Cemetery, near her mother. Paul Barnett died in 1986 and was buried beside her under a stone headed BARNETT.
