Jackie Sue Barnett
Jackie Sue Barnett was born at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on 8 June 1940. She was the only child of Paul Bunk Barnett and his wife, Agnes Christine Blalack. Her mother had been married before, to Jesse Fillmore Jackson, and had five Jackson children. So Jackie grew up the youngest of six, with four half-sisters and a half-brother: Charles George, Edith Chestine, Elizabeth Faye, Florence Mae and Betty Charlene Jackson. When the census taker came in the spring of 1940, a few weeks before she was born, Paul and Agnes were living in Jackson Township, Washington County, with four of the Jackson girls.
She grew up and went to school in Bartlesville. She graduated from College High School in 1959. She kept up with that class for the rest of her life and met regularly with her 1959 classmates.
On 20 February 1960, at Miami, Oklahoma, she married Billy Joe Sires of Ochelata. He was a few years out of the Army. Miami is the seat of Ottawa County, in the far northeast corner of the state. The couple made their home at Ochelata, a small town a few miles north of Bartlesville, and they lived there all of their married life. They had two daughters, Tammy Jo and Cassie.
Jackie worked most of her life in the oil business that built Bartlesville. She was first employed by Cities Service Oil Company in Tulsa. Then she worked nine years for TRW Reda Pump, the Bartlesville maker of electric pumps for oil wells. In 1986 she went to Applied Automation in Bartlesville, a maker of process instruments that Phillips Petroleum owned. In 1989 she joined Phillips Petroleum Company itself. She worked in the Phillips medical department until she retired in 2002.
She belonged to the Ochelata United Methodist Church and to the Jane Phillips Sorority, a Bartlesville women's club named for the wife of the oilman Frank Phillips. With her husband she belonged to the Osage Hills Wolf Hunters Association, a club of hunters who ran hounds in the Osage hills. She served as its secretary for several years.
Her parents both died in the 1980s. Her mother died at Bartlesville in April 1984, and her father at Ochelata in August 1986. Both were buried at Ochelata Cemetery under one stone.
Jackie Sue Sires died at 6:07 in the morning on Wednesday, 15 February 2017, at the Forrest Manor Nursing Home in Dewey. She was 76. Visitation was at the Stumpff Funeral Home in Bartlesville. Her graveside service was held at Ochelata Cemetery at ten in the morning on Friday, 17 February, with the Rev. Theodore Hoffman of the Ochelata United Methodist Church officiating.
She was survived by her husband; her daughters, Tammy Jo Peck and her husband Lawrence W. of Bartlesville, and Cassie Sires and her partner Bobby Barger of Dewey; and one sister, Betty Smith of Bartlesville. Four grandchildren survived her: Lawrence (Andy) Peck, Kathlyn (Katie) Askins and her husband, Olivia Jacqueline Inman, and Jaren Sires-Godinez. So did three great-granddaughters, Isabella McKenzie Sharp, Abigail Rose Askins and Madeline Grace Askins. Billy Joe Sires died in 2021 and was buried beside her.
