Agnes Harris

Agnes Harris was baptised at St Peter's, Barnstaple, in Devon on 6 April 1604, a daughter of Bartholomew Harris and Elizabeth Collamore. The clerk wrote her name "Angnis" and her father's as "Mr. Bartholamewe." She married William Spencer of Stotfold in Bedfordshire, who became one of the first settlers of Hartford in Connecticut, and was the mother of his children Sarah, Samuel and Elizabeth.

Her husband's will of 4 May 1640 left her a third of his estate, with the rest divided between their son and their two daughters. He died in 1640 or soon after, when Sarah was about five and Samuel an infant. On 11 December 1645 she married William Edwards of Hartford.

She was still living on 24 June 1650, when the court settled her first husband's estate "with the Consent of the wife of William Edwards." The bonds taken that year for the children's portions provided that if all three children died, the money was to go "to Agnes Edwards, or her Lawfull Attorney of the said Agnes, the mother of the said children." The court also made a provision about property in England "due to the wife of the sd. William Spencer," saving two thirds of it for the children. What that property was, and where it lay, the record does not say.
