Alan Clyde McCowan
Alan Clyde McCowan was born in May 1884 at Pittsburgh, son of Robert M. McCowan and Olive Aschman, and he lost both of them as a boy: his mother in 1896 when he was twelve, his father in 1898 when he was fourteen. Both are buried at Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh. By the census of 1900 he was sixteen and living as a brother-in-law in the Aspinwall household of George G. Small, who had married his older sister Erminie eight years earlier.
He married Willma Smith on 1 June 1904. She was the daughter of William R. Smith of the same borough, so the orphan married the neighbours' daughter four years after moving in with his sister. Five children followed: William Roberts Smith McCowan in May 1905, James Llewellen in September 1907, Inabel in August 1909, Charlotte Eurilda in August 1911 and Edward Ray in August 1913. About 1913 the family was living at Beaver, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in 1916 and served in the First World War from May 1917, and later censuses put him in the Allegheny County mill towns, at Hoboken and Springdale, before the family followed the lake shore west into Ohio.
He worked as a load dispatcher for the electric power company. There were later wives, Mary F. New and then Mildred, and he died on 8 June 1953 and is buried at Saint Teresa Cemetery, Sheffield, Lorain County, Ohio, in the same county as the son and grandson who carried his name.
